What You Can Do
From December 12th to the 23rd, we are inspiring fans to give at least one act of kindness to a senior during these 12 days. Won’t you please join us in making the holidays special for a senior citizen near you.
We’ll Be Visiting!
Together with some of pro football’s most legendary players, representatives from Answers for Elders and NFL Legends will be visiting seniors in two key cities across the country, including …
- Seattle, Washington
How It All Began
The 12 Days of Goodness was created by Suzanne Perkins Newman, a lifelong Seattle Seahawks fan, who used to share games with her father as an original season ticket holder. Her father had one dream: For the Seahawks to win the Lombardi Trophy. Yet her father was never able to see that day, as he passed away in 2002.
Suzanne went on to care for her mom for the last six years of her mother’s life. Because she found online resources so limited, she created an online community called Answers for Elders to support families as they are navigating through the complex and complicated world of senior care.
Recognizing that the holiday season is especially difficult for seniors – most of whom receive no regular visitors, and have lost so many of their friends and relatives – Suzanne decided to bring some cheer into their lives. She created The 12 Days of Goodness, which combined her passion for helping seniors with her lifelong passion for the Seattle Seahawks.
For 12 days in December, with the help of Seahawks alumni, Seahawks fans were encouraged to give at least one act of kindness to a senior during these 12 days.
In addition, working through the Seahawks’ Alumni Legends, part of the NFL Alumni Association’s national Pro Football Legends program), Suzanne brought together a group of Seahawks legendary players – including Steve Raible, Manu Tuiasosopo, Dave Wyman and Paul Johns – who joined her in visiting local senior centers and retirement communities in the greater Seattle and Puget Sound area. And she invited fans to join them!
Ten Seahawks’ alumni visited nine senior communities last December, creating memories that would last a lifetime, and bringing cheer to the entire communities.
What a rousing success!
Now – Answers for Elders is inviting you to help expand the program and help make the holidays special for seniors across the country.
About Answers for Elders
Now there is an Online Community to help!
At AnswersForElders.com, we believe that no one should have to experience navigating taking care of your senior loved one feeling alone and unsupported. Let’s face it. We caregivers are living in a daunting world. How do we really know if we are making the right decisions for our parents? There are so many things we face, and yet, if we knew what to prepare for in advance, things wouldn’t be such a crisis every time something happens that we have to step in and make decisions!
AnswersForElders.com was created by Suzanne Perkins Newman, an adult family caregiver walking the same path, caring for her mom. Because she found on-line resources so limited, she created an on-line community that will support you on your journey. We are a resource portal of answers that you need most, not only to learn what the issues are that you need to face, but even more- finding the local businesses that you can work with in your own local community.
We know that even though your mom or dad may or may not be in retirement living, being supported on-line as their family caregiver is a lot more than a referral service. It is our hope that here, you will find resources in your decision making process that makes your world just a little bit easier. We also realize that today in the present economy through housing market prices falling, that seniors are spending longer at home, and thus, that means you have more on your plate with mom or dad and worry even more about their safety and care at home. That’s why we provide resources here, for every day life, that helps make your job a whole lot easier.
Becoming the caretaker for our parents can be one of the most distressing experiences of a lifetime. Yet, it can also be one of the most life-changing and precious times too. Changing the dynamic between parent and child is complex. Trying to ensure that our parents age happily is often difficult and sometimes overwhelming. There are usually legal issues, medical problems, logistical nightmares, and, more and more often, financial concerns. This places overwhelming stress on the adult child, who often times is trying to juggle a family, children, relationships and a career. We understand. Our Founder has walked the same path as you.
